Time Zone Basics

What is a Time Zone?

A time zone is a region on Earth that uses the same time definition. Because the Earth rotates from west to east, the east sees the sun before the west, and the time in the east is earlier than in the west. To overcome the confusion of time, an International Meridian Conference held in Washington in 1884 stipulated that the world should be divided into 24 time zones.

Difference Between UTC and GMT

Coordinated Universal Time (UTC)

UTC is currently the world's primary time standard, based on precise time calculations from atomic clocks. All time zones are defined based on their offset from UTC, for example, China Standard Time is UTC+8.

Greenwich Mean Time (GMT)

GMT is a time standard based on the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, UK, and was once the main reference for world time. Although UTC and GMT are often considered equivalent in daily use, UTC is a more precise scientific standard.

Impact of Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time (DST) is a system of adjusting local time to save energy. During DST, clocks are set forward by one hour in spring and back in autumn. This practice allows people to wake up earlier and enjoy longer daylight hours in the evening, reducing the need for artificial lighting and making better use of natural sunlight.

Countries and regions that currently observe DST include the United States, Canada, EU countries, and parts of Australia, but many countries such as China do not implement DST.

Applications of Time Zone Conversion

International Meeting Scheduling: In cross-time zone international meetings, it is necessary to accurately convert the local time of participants from different countries.

International Travel Planning: Travelers need to adjust their itineraries to cope with time differences.

Global Business Coordination: Multinational enterprises need to coordinate the working hours of teams distributed in different time zones.

International Communication and Cooperation: Consider the local time of the other party in emails, phone calls, or video conferences to avoid contacting them at inappropriate times.
